  • Biochar is a class of refractory, stable, highly aromatic, carbon-rich solid material produced by the slow pyrolysis of biological residues under anaerobic conditions at high temperatures (typically below 700℃). It is primarily composed of elements such as C, H, O, N, P, and S; depending on the feedstock, it may also contain elements like K, Ca, Fe, Mg, Na, Zn, Cu, and Si. Its surface contains a certain amount of organic functional groups, including hydroxyl, ester, carboxyl, and aldehyde groups. Biochar typically carries a negative charge and is rich in micropores. It not only helps replenish the organic matter content in soils but also effectively retains water and nutrients, thereby enhancing soil fertility. Moreover, biochar has a relatively high calorific value and can be used as a fuel.
